Position Summary

The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of the Property & Casualty insurance company, ensuring accurate financial reporting in compliance with STAT, GAAP, and regulatory requirements. This role supports month-end, quarter-end close, and year-end closing and reporting processes.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Close

  • Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements.
  • Ensure compliance with NAIC accounting standards and state insurance department regulations.
  • In Charge of In-House Payroll to include all state reporting requirements.
  • Review and prepare journal entries, bank reconciliations, and supporting schedules in a monthly basis
  • Preparation of statutory filings, including Quarterly and Annual Statements.

Team Leadership

  • Manage, mentor, and develop accounting staff.
  • Support recruitment, training, and process improvement initiatives.

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Maintain and enhance internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Support external audits, regulatory examinations, and internal reviews.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Maintain and optimize accounting systems (e.g., general ledger, sub-ledgers, insurance systems).
  • Lead or support system implementations, upgrades, and integrations.
  • Develop and document accounting policies and procedures.

Analysis & Business Support

  • Provide financial analysis and variance explanations to management.
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting processes.

Qualifications

Education & Certification

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or MBA (required)
  • CPA or CPA-eligible (preferred)
  • Must be fully bilingual

Experience

  • 5-8+ years of accounting experience
  • Prior experience in P&C insurance accounting strongly preferred
  • Management or supervisory experience required
  • Experience with STAT reporting and NAIC filings
  • Prior audit or regulation examination experience
  • Exposure to multi-state insurance requirements a plus
  • Experience working with reinsurance a plus

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of STAT and GAAP accounting
  • Familiarity with insurance systems and reporting tools (SOVOS)
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with accounting software (e.g., Sage Peachtree)
